The hardcore SIMI member, the ATS was looking for has been arrested but his accomplice fled the spot.

The incident occurred outside Ratlam railway station, 290 km west Bhopal. Police sources said Zakir, 26, was absconding ever since a local module of the SIMI had killed an ATS trooper in Khandwa, 270 km southwest of Bhopal, in November 2009.

The ATS team, which was on his trail, had got the information that he was moving around near the railway station. Zakir and his accomplice Farhat allegedly had opened fire at the ATS team.

A constable by the name Shiv Pratap was injured in the firing and later died, sources said. Two other policemen were injured but their condition has been reported to be stable. Both the SIMI functionaries were also injured in the cross-fire.

ATS inspector general Vipin Maheshwari confirmed the policeman's death as well as Zakir's arrest.

He said Zakir was one of the three accused involved in the murder of ATS jawan Sitaram Yadav in Khandwa in 2009.

SP Ratlam RS Sikarwar said Zakir had been sent to hospital. "We hope to catch his accomplice soon."
