Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone, who has faced a lot of threats over past one year regarding her film Padmaavat, has revealed in an India Today interview that she once slapped a person on the street because he brushed past her the wrong way.
Deepika has been one of the most vocal artistes from Padmaavat team to stand for the film and reiterates that bowing down to random protests is not an option. When asked about the death threats and announcement of bounties on her nose before the release of Padmaavat, Deepika told the television channel, “I will tell you an incident which probably sums up what gave them (parents) the belief or courage. I was 14 or 15. I remember one evening my family and I were walking down the street. We had probably finished eating at a restaurant. My sister and my father walked ahead and my mother and I were walking behind. And this man brushed past me.”
“I could have, at that point, ignored, pretended like it didn’t happen. I turned back, followed this person, caught him by the collar – I was 14 – in the middle of the street slapped him and walked away. From that day on my parents knew that this girl can take care of herself,” she further said.
The team of Padmaavat faced troubles right from the time they began shooting in January last year when Karni Sena members vandalised the film sets in Jaipur and even attacked Bhansali. Later, when the first trailer and song were released, fringe groups took offence to alleged “distortion of history” and called the film a blot on Rajput pride and honour. Despite the filmmaker’s repeated disclaimers that the film did not hurt Rajput sentiments, the release of the movie had to be delayed by more than a month.
Finally, Padmaavat hit theatres on January 25 and has already crossed the Rs 150 crore mark in domestic markets. It is also breaking records in international markets and has earned more than Rs 200 crore worldwide.
