2018 has been a year of great importance for female characters in the Indian film industry. It began with Deepika Padukone’s Padmaavat. The film received criticism for romanticising the practice of jauhar. So we decided to take a look at five most impressive and inspiring female characters that one can take inspiration from, from films that released in 2018.

Mahanati, Raazi and Hey Jude have one thing in common, strong female lead roles.

Mahanati

Keerthy Suresh plays the role of the veteran south Indian actor Savitri in this biopic. The film released on May 9 and has since been receiving rave reviews for bringing Savitri back to life. Savitri had to face a lot of trials and failures initially, yet she did not give up on herself and tried only harder. Keerthy’s performance has especially been praised by critics and fans alike. The genre of biopics is new to the Telugu audience, but when Nag Ashwin made a film about their favourite actress and took them back to the golden era, the movie also succeeded at the box office.

Raazi

Raazi starring Alia Bhatt released on May 11. The film has won over the critics and audience alike with the lead cast’s performance, especially that of Alia Bhatt. The film is about a female Kashmiri spy, set during the time of the Indo-Pak war in 1971. The film is based on the fictionalised account of a true event - a novel titled Calling Sehmat by Harinder Sikka. This film, also centred on a strong female character is currently performing excellently at the box office.

Hitchki

Rani Mukherji’s film about Tourette syndrome was not just about the hurdles that she faced with the syndrome, but also about uplifting the children from Mumbai slums through practical learning. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audience. However, it performed well at the box office and earned Rs 76.49 crore. Rani as Naina Mathur inspires one to never stop trying to achieve what we really want in life, whatever be the hurdle.

Hey Jude

If Rani’s character in Hitchki suffered from Tourette syndrome, Crystal - essayed by Trisha Krishnan in the Malayalam film Hey Jude - was bipolar. Hey Jude might be titled after Nivin Pauly’s character in the film, but Crystal scored big with her impressive character. Trisha’s performance nailed Crystal’s suffering and she showed that it was important to rise above all this in life.

Rangasthalam

Rangasthalam is a purely commercial film written and directed by Sukumar and starring Ram Charan in the lead role had a female character Rama Lakshmi. It was a pivotal character portrayed by Samantha Akkineni and this character won people’s hearts purely based on her expressions throughout the film. To pull attention away from a film with the central plot revolving around the male lead and get an appreciation for one’s performance, takes talent. Rama Lakshmi made it possible for Samantha to showcase her talent.
