The iconic Liberty Cinema, which has been around since 1947 in Mumbai, is set to host a film festival after almost two decades. The theatre, which hosted several film events in the past, will once again open its doors for the unveiling of the first look of the Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh starrer, Lootera.
“The film’s first look will be launched at Liberty Cinema, a place known for its art-deco architecture and old-world charm,” says a source close to the film, adding, “The makers want to use this ambience to transport the audience into the world of Lootera. It’s a period film, which is why the makers thought of the iconic theatre.”
Liberty Cinema derives its name from the time it was founded. It was built in the same year that India gained independence and is one of the most popular cinema halls in south Mumbai. Apparently, Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! (1994) was the last film to have had its premiere here.
Lootera, which is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, has been in talks for its unusual pairing and the look of the lead actors. The film is jointly produced by Phantom and Balaji Productions.
