Bollywood actor Tisca Chopra has turned producer with a short film, Chutney. Directed by Jyoti Kapur Das, the scary and emotional journey is already the toast of Bollywood, with many of her contemporaries going gaga over Tisca’s debut venture.
The film also stars Adil Hussain and Rasika Duggal in lead roles, Chutney opens in a society party where women are gossiping about a housewife who hails from Ghaziabad. The women demean her worth and label her rustic. However, when she approaches them, they treat her with utmost respect and congratulate her on the way she “manages both household chores and society clubs”.
Tisca has also co-written Chutney along with Jyoti and Avneesh Mishra.
Tisca plays a strong character in the film: A woman who knows how to handle “high-society drama” despite her humble backgrounds. Her husband, Adil Hussain, is clearly detached from her. Rasika Duggal plays a friendly neighbour who is interested in Tisca’s cooking skills.
The best part about Chutney is that it establishes its characters with effortless ease: With just a few simple gestures and minute details in the background, all the characters come alive on the screen for the audience, making use of every moment a short film has.
With a disturbing and haunting plot, Chutney then moves onto a conversation between the housewife and a woman who is a clear threat to her marriage. With a rustic and very different look and the perfect casual, strong and determined demeanour, Tisca aces her role.
Two domestic servants add to the drama in the plot: While one of them is killed after he discovers that his wife is cheating on him, the other one always spits into the drinks he’s asked to serve his masters.
With a shocking plot and haunting performances by Adil and Tisca, this Chutney is worth the taste.
