Fans of the Sanjay Dutt-starrer Munna Bhai series, who have been waiting for the third instalment in the series — Munna Bhai Chale Amerika — will be disappointed to learn that the film won’t be made any time soon. “We couldn’t zero in on the correct ending for the storyline, despite having the rest of the story ready. We will make it if we find a good climax,” says its producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
Similarly, sequels to several hit films starring A-list actors have been announced or hinted at. We check on their current status.
Shah Rukh Khan
The big one: Don (2006), Don 2 (2011)
Coming up: Talks have been rife about Don 3 for some time now. Last year, producer Ritesh Sidhwani was quoted as saying, “How can I do Don without Don? SRK is Don and Don is SRK.” But SRK tweeted that he was unaware of a third installment.
The big one: Namastey London (2007)
Coming up: The sequel was announced two years ago, but it is yet to take off. Apparently, the film will not continue from where the first one ended, and will be a new one, featuring a love triangle between Akshay and two actresses.
The big one: Golmaal (2006), Golmaal Returns (2008), Golmaal 3 (2010)
Coming up: Rumours of a fourth part began in 2013. Last year, scriptwriter duo Sajid-Farhad mentioned that “it should start after Rohit has wrapped up his Shah Rukh Khan-starrer.”
The big one: Sarfarosh (1999)
Coming up: In 2013, Aamir told HT Café that he “had a word with John Mathew Matthan, and he is writing the script,” after John said the same at an event. A few days back, though, Aamir told us that there’s no script yet.
The big one: Dabangg (2010), Dabangg 2 (2012)
Coming up: While promoting Dabangg 2, Salman had said that part three would be a prequel to the earlier films. There has been no news of the film since then. But, film-maker Arbaaz Khan, who directed Dabangg 2, has confirmed the film, and added, “If I am confident about doing it without pressure, I will do it.”
The big one: Kaminey (2009)
Coming up: Talks of a sequel have been rife for years, but they gained traction only last year. In an interview, Shahid reportedly confirmed that the sequel is “definitely happening,” but there’s no timeline in place. There’s no official word from Vishal Bhardwaj yet.
The big one: Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), Krrish (2006), Krrish 3 (2013)
Coming up: Ever since the third part came out, talks started doing the rounds about the fourth installment. During the promotions of the film, Hrithik admitted that Krrish 4 is a possibility. But, his father, film-maker Rakesh Roshan stated that his next would be another project, so he might take up Krrish 4 after completing it.
