Govt allocates Rs 466 crore for sports in Union Budget

In addition to Rs 38 cr hike over '03-04, higher allocations have been made for sports infrastructure, synthetic playing surfaces and dope tests.

The budgetary allocation for Sports and Youth Affairs for the year 2004-05 has been raised to Rs 466 crore from Rs 428 crore last year, representing a marginal hike of Rs 38 crore.

According to the Union Budget presented in the Lok Sabha by Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday, of the 466 crore, Rs 66 crore has been earmarked for non-plan expenditure.

Compared to actuals in 2002-2003, the budgetary outlay for Sports has gone up by Rs 137.29 crore. The total in 2002-03 was 328.71 crore with a plan expenditure of 275.63 crore and non-plan expenditure of Rs 53.08 crore.

For Sports, higher allocations have been made for important schemes meant for sports infrastructure, synthetic playing surfaces, dope tests and infrastructural support to universities and colleges and Sports Authority of India.

The Government also plans to implement new schemes like State Sports Academies, development of adolescents, national and state youth centres.
