Merck unit launches vaccine, eyes top 5 slot

Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD), a part of the US pharma giant Merck & Co aims to be among the top 5 drug companies in the Indian pharma market. "We are trying to expedite the process of adding several new products to our portfolio. At present, we occupy 1% of Indian pharmaceutical market and target to enter among the top 5 drug makers by 2015," said KG Ananthakrishnan, managing director, MSD India at the launch of Rota Teq, a diarrhoea vaccine. The company stands at the 29th position in India.

Rota Teq is a first pentavalent vaccine available in India to prevent diarrhoea in infants and young children.

The company will produce the vaccine in the US and then import and market it in India.
