The relief and rehabilitation policy for farmers will be taken to the Cabinet within a couple of days, reports Satyen Mohapatra.Updated: Apr 10, 2007, 21:59 IST
The relief and rehabilitation policy for farmers will be taken to the Cabinet within a couple of days, Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh informed in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters at the conclusion of the Orientation Meeting of District Programme Coordinators of 113 newly added NREGA districts he said the draft of the policy had been sent to the Law Ministry and after it is vetted by them, it would within days be taken to the Cabinet.
The relief and rehabilitation policy is for the farmers displaced by land acquisitions for industrial projects and the SEZs .
Singh indicated that compulsory land acquisition for industrial projects including Special Economic Zones would not be allowed "at any cost" .
The Empowered Group of Ministers headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee recently decided to amend the SEZ rules asking states not to go in for compulsory acquisition of land.
It also decided to put a cap of 5000 hectares on the SEZs.
While stressing that his ministry "would ensure that the interests of farmers are protected," he did not specify whether the 83 SEZs cleared by the eGoM recently would be covered under the impending rehabilitation policy. The SEZs already in possession of land may not attract the provisions of the new policy, he indicated.
