"Seizure of 180.244 kg south-west Asian origin heroin (a narcotic drug) during 2011 at the Indo-Pak border in various districts of Punjab including Ferozepur indicates that smugglers based in Pakistan are trying to sneak in narcotics by resorting to two main modus operandi," minister of state for home M Ramachandran told the House in a written reply.

The Minister said the narcotics are smuggled either "by throwing the consignment over the fence which is retrieved by their Indian counterpart in Indian territory or the consignment is concealed in a plastic pipe beneath the fence and cleared by their Indian counterparts."

He said various steps have been taken to check, detect and prevent drug smuggling from bordering countries.
