Official sources said here on Sunday that a number of vehicles, carrying tourists, were on way to Leh from Nubra, which recently experienced snowfall, when an avalanche hit two vehicles, resulting in injuries to eight passengers.

Rescue operation was immediately launched as soon as rescue teams were rushed to the spot from nearby villages.

The injured were shifted to Sonam Narboo Hospital at Leh where two of them were declared brought dead.

The dead have been identified as Mahajan Sudhakar and Jagdish Pradhan Mahadev, residents of Mumbai.

Last week more than 250 tourists and locals were stranded on the Nubra-Leh road after their vehicle got stuck due to heavy snowfall.

However, they were rescued by the Army, police and local administration.
