Amarinder raps state govt for ‘paltry’ sums to CWG medallists
Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday criticised the Punjab government for awarding ‘paltry sums’ to the winners of the Commonwealth Games. He said the state government was playing a “cruel joke” on the players.
In a statement here, Amarinder said it was disgusting on part of the state government to announce Rs 7 lakh, Rs 5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh for the gold, silver and bronze medallists, respectively. He said this only reflected the casual attitude of the government towards sports and sportspersons.
He said that during his tenure as CM when Sunita Rani had won the gold medal in athletics in the Asian Games, his government had given her Rs 1 crore and appointed her DSP in Punjab Police.
“Show some grace to the young boys and girls who have done us proud,” Amarinder told the state government.
The former chief minister said when the neighbouring Haryana was giving Rs 1 crore, Rs 50 lakh and Rs 25 lakh respectively, to the gold, silver and bronze medallists, giving them meagre amount in Punjab was not only disgusting and disappointing, but also demoralizing, for players.
