The clock ticked away at its own sweet will on Valentine's Day oblivious to the snail's pace at which cars and bikes festooned with red, heart-shaped balloons made the rounds of Chandigarh's gehri route on Saturday.

While many a love-struck couple made the most of their date with Cupid, lesser mortals headed for work were left to their own devices, trying to find a way out of the traffic mess not only on the gehri route of Sectors 10 and 11 but also in the busy Sectors 17, 34 and 35.

Balloons tucked in car windowpanes and stuck to motorbikes made for head-turners but many a commuter was seen hassled as the day progressed. Hawkers selling heart-shaped balloons did brisk business on virtually every major crossing of the tricity. Despite the chaos, one could spot young couples dressed in their best, engrossed in cosy conversation, offering respite to those who ended up reporting late to work or to an engagement.
