Police on Tuesday booked seven members of a family, including the husband of a 25-year-old woman, who allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Bhakara canal on Monday.
The family members were booked following a suicide note, recovered by police from her in-laws house, accusing them of “mental harassment and beating” over a property issue.
The body of the victim - Amandeep Kaur, a resident of Ward Number 10, Star Colony, Sirhind - is yet to be fished out of the canal, said police, adding they were trying to trace the body with the help of divers.
In-charge of the Sirhind police post Sarabjeet Singh said the incident came to light when a passer-by near noticed the victim jumping into the canal and found a phone number written on a paper near her articles, which she had left behind on the bank of the canal.
The passer-by immediately dialed the number and sounded her father Avtar Singh of Lall Kalan village in Ludhiana, about the inciden, said police.After answering the call, Avtar Singh approached police.Police said Avtar Singh identified his daughter’s articles and we recovered a suicide note from her in-laws residence, in which she had alleged in-laws of harassing her.
She got married to Jaswinder Singh two and a half years ago, but the couple didn’t have a child, said police, adding: her in-laws family forced her to take the extreme step.
The other accused have been identified as Laxman Singh, father in law; Sawran Kaur, mother in-law; Jaswant Singh and Harvinder Singh, brother in-laws; and Amandeep Kaur and Gurpreet Kaur, sister in-laws.
Police have booked the accused under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
