In one shot, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Panchkula, Ashwin Shenvi suspended six of the 12 cops stationed at the Chandimandir police station on Friday night after they were allegedly found drunk by villagers when they had gone to nab a quack. Another posted at the control room also faced action for his love for the bottle.
Among those suspended are the station house officer, inspector Jai Prakash, and the additional SHO, sub-inspector Narinder Kumar.
And it only gets more interesting. On Friday night, under inspector Prakash, a police team had gone to Beed Ghaggar village in search of a quack. They asked for "Dr" Satish's licence which he could not produce. Arguments ensued. As the police personnel were in an inebriated condition, the villagers protested. While the cops left, villagers followed them till the police station, pressing for their medical examination and raising slogans.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP), headquarters Krishan Hooda, and ACP, Panchkula, Sandeep Malik reached the police station. In between, five personnel who had gone to Beed Ghaggar fled, though the SHO remained and was later found drunk in a medical test.
Reinforcements had to be called from Sectors 5, 14 and 20, and Mansa Devi to contain the drama, which continued till 2am. While force was being called by conveying the message through the control room, the control room in-charge, SI Deep Chand, sounded drunk. Medical examination confirmed that; and he was also suspended later.
DCP Shenvi also reached the station, meanwhile, and suspended all six posted there.
Inspector Lalit Kumar, SHO of Pinjore, was asked to take charge at night. "Now, inspector Arvind has taken over as SHO of Chandimandir," said commissioner of police, Ambala-Panchkula, Rajbir Deswal.
The suspended personnel include assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Jaswinder, constables Dilbag and Jaswinder, and exemptee head constable Harbans. "I have suspended six personnel," confirmed Shenvi. Deswal said the SHO was medically examined and was found drunk.
Councillor and resident of Beed Ghaggar, Vinod Kumar, however, said, "I had called the cops to check the quack and to stop some ruckus being created by drunk people. But my opponents protested against the police personnel."
