The union health ministry is contemplating to increase fee of all medical courses at centrally run medical institutes including AIIMS and PGIMER by 50 times.
Following a request from the health ministry, the tariff commission of the union ministry of commerce and industry was asked to prepare a report on restructuring the fee of medical courses at the 13 central government-run autonomous institutes, including the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
The commission's report has proposed to increase fee of almost all courses. The matter was also discussed in the meeting of the standing finance committee of the PGIMER last month.
If the recommendations are implemented, MD/MS courses at PGIMER would cost Rs 1.66 lakh as compared to Rs 3,600 at present. For PhD, students will have to pay Rs 1 lakh as compared to Rs 2,600. At present, for DM and MCh courses the fee is Rs 3700 annually; revised rates would be Rs 1.66 lakh.
As the commission had sought the PGIMER administration's comment on the report, the institute constituted a special committee under dean Dr Amod Gupta, which agreed with the recommendations: "After careful consideration on the report of the tariff commission, the standing academic committee stated that the recommended rates seems to have been arrived at based on fairly objective reasoning. The committee also felt that the current fee structures of government and autonomous institutes such as PGIMER, Chandigarh, are not at par with the ground realities."
PGIMER spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar said the institute had sent the comments and there was no immediate move regarding increasing fee.
