PU to host IASc meet in November: Prof Arun Grover

Panjab University vice-chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover announced on Saturday that the 79th annual meeting of the Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), Bangalore, will be hosted by the university from November 8 to 10.
Grover was addressing the PU syndicate meeting at the campus.
Before the start of the meeting, Grover talked about different events listed in the coming month, which will go up to next year. The V-C informed that union minister of communications and IT Kapil Sibal has given his acceptance for release of commemorative postage stamp on professor Ruchi Ram Sahni on October 24, which is also PU's foundation day.
Grover further informed that the varsity has been assured of Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) grant of Rs.34.8 crores during the phase-2. This assurance was conveyed during a meeting of the PURSE coordinators, convened by the secretary, department of science and technology (DST), on July 4.
Prof Grover said that the IASc annual meeting would form a part of the commemorations to honour Prof Ruchi Ram Sahni, one of the founder fellows of IASc in 1934, and remembering the contributions of all the distinguished scientists from Punjab.
This year's meeting also commemorates 125th birth anniversary of the founder of IASc, the Nobel Laureate, Professor CV Raman, he added.
Prof Grover added that PU has been informed that Dr M Hamid Ansari, vice-president of India and chancellor of Panjab University, has in principle agreed to come to the university convocation in February/March 2014.
However, director, vice-president's secretariat, New Delhi, has informed that due to unforeseen circumstances, chancellor is unable to attend the function on October 24 and has advised PU to go ahead with the function as scheduled.
