Sohana man in dock as woman alleges forcible abortions

A resident of Beed Ghaggar village got a case registered on Sunday against her husband, Ranjeet Singh of Sohana (SAS Nagar, for allegedly forcing her to abort pregnancy twice, besides assaulting her several times. It was not immediately known if these were cases of female foeticide in particular.

Harvinder Kaur said she had got married to Ranjeet in 2002, and both would have frequent fights, necessitating family intervention. She said she wanted to be a mother but her husband and in-laws forced her to abort. She also levelled allegations of cruelty and criminal intimidation too.

The police's cell dealing with crime against women investigated the allegations and forwarded the complaint for registration of case. The FIR was registered under sections 313 (causing miscarriage without woman's consent), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 328 (giving poison), 498A (cruelty against woman), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. However, no arrests were made.
