The trio identified as Arun, Deepak and Reepak went to a house in Sector 7 on the pretext of getting forms filled for smartcard. Sakshi Modi, who was alone at her house along with her 8-month-old baby girl, did not open the door and told them she was not interested in smartcards.
But the trio then asked for water. Getting an opportunity, Arun and Reepak barged into the house and held Sakshi and her daughter hostages on knife-point. They threatened to kill the daughter if Sakshi raised her voice. Then the third accomplice Deepak also entered the house and helped loot jewelleries and cash.
As Sakshi's mother-in-law arrived, all the youths fled away. But as they raised alarm, people gathered and a motorcyclist hit one of the fleeing youths. He was identified as Arun, a resident of Jalandhar. He revealed the names of his accomplices as Deepak and Reepak, both residents of Manimajra. Later, others were arrested too.
