Announcing this on Monday, Haryana’s chief electoral officer Sumita Misra said Vijender was a national sports figure who had achieved great heights in boxing.

“He has mass appeal, a clean image and non-political affiliations,” she said, adding that as a brand icon he would appear in all advertisements of the election department in the print and visual media.

Vijender, who turned 26 last week, won a gold medal in the 2010 Asian Games and a bronze each in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2009 world boxing championships. The Arjuna award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna were conferred on him for excellence in sports.

The champion boxer is also associated with blood donation and income tax campaigns. The Election Commission of India had in October selected comedian Jaspal Bhatti as the brand icon for the 2012 Punjab assembly elections.
