People of this town are getting more traffic tickets each day for wrong parking, and wondering where is the right place. The lots are scarce indeed.
The district magistrate has banned wrong-side parking even in the small lanes, an order that the locals see as one-sided and meant to harass them. “Either the state government has gone bankrupt to be in desperate need of money or the Congress government is punishing Hamirpur for its voting for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the last Lok Sabha elections,” said a commuter. The BJP won all four parliamentary seats in the state.
Local parliamentarian Anurag Thakur is critical of the DM order and has written to him to demand that he withdraws it. A commuter here earned a traffic ticket on Thursday for parking his vehicle on the Sujanpur road and had to submit Rs 200 as fine. “When I asked the police officer where to park, he told me do it outside the district courts. It is so far that I'd have to take a bus back to office,” he said.
Another commuter said a police officer as asked him how the state government had permitted him to buy a vehicle, if he had no parking space. The bad behavior of the traffic police coupled with the DM order without the necessary parking facilities being created have become a source of discontent in the town. People will take up this issue with chief minister Virbhadra Singh during his upcoming visit to the town.
Meanwhile, it's the BJP that is coming to support them in building pressure on the DM to revoke the order that has only fuelled anger against the Congress government in the state.
