Body on bench: Sacked ASI booked for rape, murder of 23-yr-old nurse

As per the police, the accused allegedly raped the nurse at his home before strangulating her to death. He also allegedly deleted some closed-circuit television camera footage at his house, for which he has been booked under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), besides rape and murder.

Nine days after a 23-year-old nurse’s body was found on a bench near a village pond in Sohana, police have booked a dismissed assistant sub-inspector for her rape and murder.

The accused Rashpreet Singh, 35, is currently on the run and a lookout circular has been issued for him.

Mohali deputy superintendent of police (DSP) HS Bal said, “The accused knew the victim for a long time and we found crucial call details besides CCTV footage through which we identified him.”

The victim was a native of Abohar and worked at a private hospital in the tricity.

As per the police, the accused allegedly raped the victim at his home before strangulating her to death. He also allegedly deleted some closed-circuit television camera footage at his house, for which he has been booked under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), besides rape and murder.

“He had also got lights installed on the number plates, of the scooter on which he carried the victim’s body, which made it difficult to read it,” said a cop who didn’t wish to be named.

The postmortem report of the deceased however revealed that cause of death in this case was “asphyxia due to throttling”.
