The municipal corporation is on its way to attaining 100% processing of the city’s sanitary waste — which may include napkins, diapers, sanitary pads and blood-soaked cotton. Within seven days of starting the process, the quantum has gone up from 22.6 kg to 381.80 kg.

The civic body had recently entered an agreement with a firm for the same.

The city generates approximately 500kg sanitary waste every day. Residents often wrap sanitary napkins while discarding them, but even then, there is prolific growth of microorganisms from the same — which becomes a threat to human health. To avoid this, the staff involved in garbage collection has been provided with special dustbins which have antimicrobial linings.

The sanitary waste collected from households is taken to three designated collection points, material recovery facilities, from where the authorised processor collects it for scientific incineration.
