The Punjab and Haryana high court has sought an affidavit of deputy commissioner, Ludhiana in a suo motu plea, taking cognizance of reports in May that nine girls went missing in Ludhiana in a span of 48 hours.
The high court bench has sought the affidavit by July 23 .
The high court bench of acting chief justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra and justice Rohit Kapoor has sought the affidavit by July 23 with regard to the allegations and the steps taken in this regard by the administration. Based on police data newspapers in Ludhiana had carried reports in this regard.
In June the Punjab State Commission for Women had also sought a report from Ludhiana police taking cognizance of these reports.
Subsequently, local police had clarified that 11 FIRs pertaining to 13 missing girls had been registered across various police stations in Ludhiana around May end and beginning of the June. The police had ruled out angle of kidnapping, abduction or the involvement of any organised criminal network and had maintained that preliminary inquiries indicated that the girls had left their homes “voluntarily due to personal or family-related reasons”.
