Faridkot : A kabaddi player sustained injury after being shot at by two unidentified assailants at Dhurkot Ransih village in Moga district on Monday morning.

Harvinder Singh, kabaddi player, was shot at in Dhurkot Ransih village in Moga district on Monday morning.

Police said a village resident living abroad hired shooters to dissuade Harvinder Singh, 34, from contesting the ensuing panchayat elections.

Harvinder sustained a bullet injury in his leg after which he was admitted to a hospital, where his condition remains stable. Harvinder had joined Aam the Aadmi Party (AAP) recently and was to contest the panchayat elections for the post of sarpanch.

The incident was captured on the CCTV in which two persons, who were seen standing at the main gate of Harvinder’s residence, opened fire at him and fled.

Moga senior superintendent of police J Elenchezhian said: “As per the preliminary investigation, Jagdeep Singh, alias Jagga, of Dhurkot Ransih village, who is presently living abroad, got Harvinder attacked to dissuade him from contesting upcoming panchayat elections. We have found some leads and both the assailants will be nabbed soon.”

A case under the Arms Act and attempt to murder has been registered at the Nihal Singh Wala police station.
