Focal Point police have registered a first information report (FIR) against the accused, who has been identified as Gulam Hussain, 40, of Rajiv Gandhi Colony. He hails from Rohtas of Bihar.

The accused was arrested late on Monday night and police teams have recovered a wooden log from his possession allegedly used in the crime.

Assistant commissioner of police (ACP, Industrial Area-A) Jatinder Singh said the accused and the victim, Bharat Lal, 35, of Pratapganj of Uttar Pradesh, lived in a rented accommodation in Rajiv Gandhi Colony.

On October 22, the two consumed liquor in the room and indulged in a spat. Gulam Hussain could not find his mobile phone and accused Bharat Lal of stealing it. The argument turned violent and he took a wooden log and bludgeoned him.

“Banvari Lal, a neighbour, said he was present in his rented accommodation, when he heard spat between Gulam Hussain and Bharat Lal. The former accused his roommate of stealing his mobile phone. He then bludgeoned him with a wooden log and fled leaving him injured,” the ACP said.

On being informed, the Focal Point police reached the spot and rushed the victim to the civil hospital for treatment. Sensing his critical condition, the doctors referred him to Government Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to the injuries on Monday.

Inspector Amandeep Singh Brar, station house officer (SHO) at the Focal Point police station, said a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

After the murder when police searched the room, they found the accused’s mobile phone lying with his own belongings.
