Ludhiana: Rape victim booked for creating fake social media accounts of accused

A rape victim has been booked for creating fake social media accounts of her alleged rapist, who is currently lodged in Ludhiana Central Jail, and posting objectionable comments.

The accused, Harmanpreet Singh, was arrested in August after the woman lodged a complaint against him alleging that he had raped her on the pretext of marriage. An FIR under Sections 376 and 506 of the IPC was registered against him on August 12.

On July 3, Harmanpreet Singh filed a complaint stating that someone had created fake Facebook and Instagram accounts in his name, posting his pictures and objectionable comments. Police traced the mobile number used to operate the accounts and summoned the woman for questioning.

According to police, the woman confessed to creating the fake accounts to collect evidence against the accused. Upon realising her mistake, she deleted all posts.

After completing the investigation, the cyber crime police of Ludhiana Rural lodged an FIR against the woman under Section 66C of the Information Technology Act.
