A man shot dead his sister for marrying against the family wishes on Panj Peer Road in Ludhiana on Saturday night, police said.

The police have arrested the accused and recovered an illegal .32-bore pistol and 21 bullets from his possession. Eighteen empty shells were recovered from the crime spot, said the police.

The incident took place where the victim (22) and her husband (25) were living for the past one week. The accused reached the accommodation on a motorcycle and opened fire at his sister’s husband who was standing outside. He received bullet injuries on his face and shoulder, the police said.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP, city 3) Shubham Aggarwal said the accused barged into the house and fired gunshots at her sister. She received three bullet injuries and died on the spot, Aggarwal said.

The accused managed to flee on his motorcycle as locals gathered at the spot after hearing gunshots. He was later nabbed near Ladhowal, the police said.

The ADCP said the police rushed the injured to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital where his condition is stated to be stable.

The victim’s husband is employee of accused’s father, who is a realtor and financier.

The couple eloped on June 21 and got married on June 29. They changed their location following threats from the victim’s family and returned to city a week ago, said the ADCP.

A case under Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms act has been lodged against the accused at the PAU police station. The police are questioning the accused to know from where he has procured the illegal weapon and ammunition, the ADCP said.
