Police have decided to take preventive measures in view of rising snatching incidents in the city. It was announced on Sunday that people who are facing trial in two or more cases of snatching will be sent to jail for up to 30 days if their activities raise suspicion.

Special committees have been formed at police stations to prepare a list of repeat offenders and monitor them.
The city has witnessed at least 30 snatching incidents in the past 20 days and women were victims in most of them. Police suspect that the miscreants are likely repeat offenders who indulge in crime again after availing bail.
Police said they have arrested 39 snatchers in 18 cases in the past 12 days and recovered 110 mobile phones, six stolen bikes, one scooter, two cars, ₹1 lakh in cash and gold earrings from their possession.
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP, investigation) Varinder Singh Brar said that the PCR motorcycle squads have also been asked to keep a tab on the habitual offenders.
Police had initiated a similar drive to against drug peddling in 2020. An inventory of at least 400 habitual offenders had been prepared and some of them were nabbed as a preventive measure.
Two gangs of snatchers, burglars busted with arrest of five men
Police on Sunday busted two gangs involved in snatchings and burglaries with the arrest of give men.
Police have recovered a total of 14 mobile phones, four weapons and three motorcycles from their possession.
In the first case police, police arrested Sunny Kumar alias Sunny alias Afeem of Seera village, Shubham Kumar of Surjit Colony on Jagirpur Road and Amanpreet Singh alias Aman of Mahavir Homes Colony in Khawajke village.
Senior inspector Davinder Singh, said, “The accused used to execute snatchings in areas including grain market near jalandhar bypass, vegetable market in Meharban, Noorwala Road, Rahon Road and Subhash Nagar.”
A case under Sections 379B (2)(snatching) 379(theft), 457(lurking house-trespass), 380(using a false trademark) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused at Meharban police station.
In the second case police arrested Ranjit Kumar and Ankit Kumar of Captain Colony in Meharban. They were nabbed from Rahon Road.Police said that the accused used to barge into break into house and decamp with valuables.
A separate case has been registered against them under Sections 380, 457 and 458 of Indian Penal Code at Meharban police station.
