Punjab teacher ends life; was upset over SIR work, says co-worker

His colleague says he was distressed over SIR-related duty as he was unable to complete the SIR work in time; FIR registered and a probe initiated, say police

A 42-year-old teacher, said to be upset over the assignments related to Special Intensive Revision (SIR), ended his life by jumping into a canal near the Bhattian bridge in Gurdaspur district on Monday. The deceased was posted at Government Primary School in Bhaini Mian Khan. The police have registered an FIR and initiated an investigation.

Village sarpanch Kaushal Singh, along with two other teachers posted at the same school—Gurpratap Singh and Simran Singh—said the deceased, before taking the extreme step, informed one of them over the phone about his intention. Gurpratap Singh said the deceased phoned him on Monday morning, informing him that he was near the Bhattian canal and that his vehicle, containing all his belongings, was parked nearby.

“The deceased said that he was deeply distressed over SIR-related duty. He was unable to complete the SIR work in time. He said he could no longer bear the pressure. He ended the call and jumped into the canal,” Gurpratap Singh said.

Police said the deceased’s car was found near the Bhattian bridge on the Sabrao branch canal in Kahnuwan sub-division. The body was recovered during a search operation involving police personnel and divers on Tuesday.

Police officials said they registered a case and initiated an investigation to ascertain what drove him to end his life.
