In a key administrative development, the UT administration reinstated Sanjay Arora as the municipal chief engineer, months after he was removed from the post on October 24, 2025. He has been appointed for a period of a year, and is set to assume charge on April 1.

Earlier, the UT administration had invited applications to fill the position on a regular basis. It had received applications from 12 officers across various states. However, no consensus could be reached on a suitable candidate, following which authorities decided to reassign the role to Arora. (HT File)

Following his removal last year, the additional charge of the post had been assigned to UT administration’s chief engineer CB Ojha. With Arora’s reappointment, the interim arrangement has now been withdrawn.

Earlier, the administration had invited applications to fill the position on a regular basis. It had received applications from 12 officers across various states. However, no consensus could be reached on a suitable candidate, following which authorities decided to reassign the role to Arora.

Arora was removed from the post in October last year following direct orders from Punjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria. Sources had then cited dissatisfaction among Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors and reported differences between Arora and former mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla as key factors behind the decision. Multiple complaints had also reportedly reached the Administrator’s office, including concerns over coordination with elected representatives.
