Sarabjit Singh’s sister Dalbir Kaur passes away
Sarabjit Singh’s daughter Poonam said her aunt Dalbir Kaur was suffering from a lung infection for the past one year
Dalbir Kaur, who relentlessly fought for her brother Sarabjit Singh’s release from a Pakistani prison, passed away on Sunday. She was 67.

Her last rites were performed at her native Bhikhiwind village in Tarn Taran district.
According to her family members, she complained of severe chest pain on Saturday night and was taken to a private hospital in Bhikhiwind where doctors stated her condition as critical. She was shifted to the ICU and died after a few hours.
Sarabjit’s daughter Poonam said her aunt was suffering from a lung infection for the past one year.
Sarabjit was convicted of spying by a Pakistani court and was sentenced to death in 1991. The Pakistani government had stayed his execution for an indefinite period in 2008. He died following an attack on him in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat prison by fellow inmates in April 2013. His body was brought from Lahore to Amritsar and his list rites were performed in Bhikhiwind. Sarabjit was a farmer and had mistakenly crossed over to Pakistan.
Several years ago, Dalbir had raised her voice at different platforms to get his brother out of prison and prove his innocence. She also visited Kot Lakhpat jail twice with Sarabjit’s two daughters and wife to enquire about his health.
The story of the struggle faced by Sarabjit and his sister was captured in the 2016 film ‘Sarabjit’. It was not just a film about struggle, but also catered to the theme of brother-sister relationship. In the film, Randeep Hooda played the role of Sarabjit Singh and the role of Dalbir Kaur was played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
