Ludhiana: Snatching accused fractures arm while escaping, arrested

A snatching accused fractured his arm in a bid to escape before he was arrested along with his aide by police in a raid.

The Division number 5 police also recovered as many as 10 mobile phones from their possession, which they had snatched from commuters.

The accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Mani of Islamganj and Raj Visht of Vishwakarma colony.

Assistant commissioner of police (ACP, Civil Lines) Jasroop Kaur Bath said that police on Sunday conducted a raid near Manjit Nagar for the arrest of the accused following a tip-off.

On seeing the police team, the accused, Gurpreet, tried to scale the wall constructed alongside a railway track but fell on the tracks and fractured his right arm.

The ACP said that the accused are drug addicts and indulged in crime to meet their need for drugs. The accused used to target commuters and snatch mobile phones and other valuables from them by threatening them with sharp-edged weapons. The accused used to sell mobile phones further for money.

A case under sections 379-B and 411 of the IPC has been lodged against the accused at Division number 5 police station.

Inspector Neeraj Chaudhary, SHO at Division number 5 police station, said that Gurpreet Singh is already facing a trial in three cases of snatching and burglary.
