One of the most prestigious exhibitions of tricity, the annual art show started on Wednesday and will go on till March 31.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Punjab governor and UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit while advisor to the UT administrator, Dharam Pal (IAS) was the guest of honour.

“This platform for exhibiting artworks and expressions in the creativity of artists from across tricity (including professionals and students) is a showcase of the art of our times,” says CLKA chairman Bheem Malhotra, adding that the aim of the exhibition is to “encourage artists to take their works to a larger audience in a professional setting, interact with art lovers and get in touch with the latest art trends”.

The inaugural event and the award ceremony were organised at the Galleries of Punjab Arts Council Sector 16B, Chandigarh at 5.30pm.

“The CLKA had invited entries of artists of across tricity in student and professional categories. Total 210 artists had submitted 498 works. Of these, the Jury selected 119 works in both categories. Three awards of 50,000 each were given in the professional category and five awards of 25,000 each in the student category. Four merit awards of 20,000 each were given in the professional category and four of 10,000 each in the student category. Five artists were given Open Hand Art Studios space for four months,” informs Malhotra.

The three-member jury comprised eminent personalities from the field of art printmaker Dattatreya Apte, painter Santosh Kumar Verma and sculptor Tutu Pattnaik, who are eminent names in their respective fields in New Delhi.

Graphics printmaker Abhishek Tiwari, photographer B Ajay Kumar, and sculptor Tulsi Ram won in the professional category; while merit awards in the same category were given to Vishal in stone, Rishi Raj Tomer in drawing, and Sachin Lohan in woodcut printmaking.

Stone sculptor Vishal Rawat, painter Rajni, printmaker Gurleen Kaur, painter Khushboo Raghuwanshi, and photographer Khanak Goyal won in the student category; while merit awards in the same category were given to stone sculptor Saket Vishwakarma, printmaker Vijay, painter Akanksha, and Ashish Kumar for charcoal drawing.

The jury members said the works submitted were diverse in terms of medium, treatment, subject, and philosophy. “Be it sculptures, paintings, photographs, graphics, printmaking, installations, or drawings, each had the artists experimenting with material, presentation, use of colours, textures, and subjects.”

The works depict many emotions, everyday life, human interactions, internal and external journeys, and much more… and strive to create a dialogue with room for multiple interpretations and reflections.
