Bypoll to the Rajouri Garden assembly seat will be held on April 9, the Election Commission of India announced on Thursday, imposing the model code of conduct in the city.
The seat fell vacant after Aam Aadmi Party legislator Jarnail Singh quit and decided to contest the Punjab assembly polls, against Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal from Lambi, held last month.
The announcement for bypolls also led to cancellation of the Cabinet meeting which was scheduled for 6 pm on Thursday evening. Sources said one of the major items listed on the agenda was revision of the pass policy for buses of the Delhi Transport corporation.
Officials said the model code restricts the government from announcing any decision that also affects the voters in the assembly that goes to bypolls.
Notifications for the by polls will be done on March 14 and last date for nominations will be March 21. While the polls will be held on April 9, counting of votes will be taken up on April 13.
Jarnail had resigned from his seat on January 14 and his resignation was accepted by the Speaker from the same day. Jarnaiil had resigned as it is mandatory to be a registered voter in the state from where an individual is interested in contesting assembly polls.

The announcement for the bypolls comes at a time when the city is approaching the civic polls for the three municipal corporations. The state election commission is likely to announce date for the civic polls post Holi.
Sources said the municipal polls are likely to be held on any day post April 15 as the new House is mandated to be constituted afresh by April 27
