Three people have been arrested in connection with a burglary of a Saket residence of a senior citizen, police said on Thursday, adding that two of them were suspected burglars and the third person reportedly received a portion of the stolen goods. The incident was reported on October 31.
The burglars were identified as Shivam Sonkar alias Sibu, 25, and Akash Sharma, 32, of Jahangirpuri. The third person, a 28-year-old woman, was from Amritsar in Punjab, police said. The police recovered the entire cache of stolen gold and diamond jewellery worth around ₹21 lakh in raids in Delhi and Punjab.
“One suspect was spotted near the house in CCTV footage, leading investigators to Sonkar, who was arrested on December 16. His associate Sharma was arrested subsequently,” deputy commissioner of police (south) Ankit Chauhan said.
During interrogation, the accused told police that they hid the stolen jewellery at a rented premises in Amritsar. Police recovered gold jewellery weighing 131.41 grams, including bangles, chains, a mangalsutra, diamond-studded earrings, a wrist watch and perfume. A gold chain mortgaged at a finance company was also seized.
