Delhi LG asks universities to align academic research with urban challenges

Delhi's LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu urged universities to tackle urban issues like pollution and health, enhancing student engagement and research collaboration.

New Delhi: Delhi lieutenant governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed universities and higher education institutions under the government to align academic research and student engagement with key urban challenges, including air pollution, traffic congestion, water scarcity and public health, officials said on Thursday.

Chairing a meeting with vice-chancellors and directors of universities and institutions recently, the LG, who is the chancellor of these institutes, called for stronger collaboration between academia, government, society and industry to improve employability, entrepreneurship and skill development among students, added officials.

Officials said the LG asked institutions to sensitise students towards measures such as using public transport and carpooling to reduce fossil fuel consumption.

The LG also directed universities to involve students in issues such as women’s safety, waste management, groundwater recharge, green mobility and urban sustainability.

Among the priority areas identified for research were air quality management, Yamuna rejuvenation, intelligent transport systems, mental health, disaster resilience, disease surveillance and livelihood opportunities for Delhi’s informal workforce, officials added.
