Man stabs wife to death, dies by suicide in Delhi’s Narela

The incident was the fallout of an argument between the couple. Their sons, aged 15 an 11, tried to intervene

A 45-year-old man allegedly killed his 38-year-old wife by stabbing her with a screwdriver during a heated argument, and then hung himself from a ceiling fan at their rented house in outer Delhi’s Narela on Wednesday morning, police said.

Police have learnt that man suspected that his wife was in an affair, which they say might be the reason of the fight which led to their deaths.

During the fight on Wednesday morning, the couple’s sons, aged 15 an 11, were also present in the first floor house, located in a two-storey building.

In their statement, they told the police that during the fight, their father first stabbed the mother and then hanged himself. The children also said their father sent them out while he was attacking their mother and locked the room from inside, police said.

The children could not specify the exact reason behind the fight, officers said.

Police also did not find a suicide note from the spot. However, through inquiry from neighbours, friends and relatives, police said they learnt that the man suspected his wife of having an affair with someone. The man also did not want his wife, who was employed at a private company, to work, as that stoked his suspicions even more, said a police officer, who asked not to be named.

Deputy commissioner of police (outer-north) Ravi Kumar Singh said that at around 8 am on Wednesday, the Narela police station received a call about the murder-suicide by the deceased woman’s brother.

On reaching the spot, the police found the room locked from inside. They were informed that there were bodies of a couple inside. Police then broke open the door in the presence of the couple’s relatives and neighbours.

“The body of the woman with multiple stab wounds was lying on the floor. Her husband was found hanging. The crime scene was inspected by forensic experts. The couple was married for 18 years. They had been fighting for quite some time. On Wednesday morning, the couple had a fight that their two sons tried to stop. As per children’s statement, the father first attacked their mother with a sharp object multiple times and then died by suicide,” said DCP Singh.

The children immediately informed their maternal uncle in Haryana’s Sonepat about the incident. The uncle, in turn, informed the police. The children were, meanwhile, handed over to their relatives, officers said.
