Man crushed to death by truck near IIT-Delhi

A 35-year-old LIC employee was killed by a concrete truck in Delhi. The driver fled but was arrested; a case for negligent driving is underway.

A 35-year-old employee of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) riding a motorcycle was killed after he was allegedly run over by a concrete mixture truck on the Outer Ring Road near IIT Delhi Metro station in south Delhi on Wednesday, police said.

The deceased was identified as 35-year-old Uttam Nagar resident Manish Kumar, who worked as a clerk with the LIC

The truck driver attempted to flee the spot, leaving the injured behind, but passersby intercepted him at the Hauz Khas flyover.

The suspect was handed over to the police, who arrested him. A case was registered under sections 281 (negligent driving) and 106 (causing a person’s death by a rash or negligent act) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Kishangarh police station.

Deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Amit Goel said a call regarding a road accident near IIT Metro station was received around 9.15 am, and a police team found a damaged motorcycle and a man bleeding on the road near the footpath. Police said, according to an eyewitness, the bike rider was crushed under the rear wheels of a concrete mixture truck while he was attempting to overtake the truck.

The deceased was identified as 35-year-old Uttam Nagar resident Manish Kumar, who worked as a clerk with the LIC. He was headed to his office in Ghitorni when the accident occurred.

Police said Kumar is survived by his mother and elder brother, and was unmarried. “We learnt about Manish’s death from his friend who called us. He had been contacted by a passerby who had found his contact details from my brother’s phone’s last dialled numbers,” said Jatinder Kumar , 38, the victim’s brother.

Police identified the driver as a 33-year-old resident of Delhi’s Najafgarh. “The suspect told us that he was driving the ready-mix concrete truck from Najafgarh towards Panchsheel Park near Chirag Delhi. He stated he did not realise that the biker had come under the rear wheels of the truck,” the officer said.

The victim’s brother alleged that the driver was lying about not knowing about the accident, as there was blood all over the truck wheels.
