Two held from UP for duping elderly in Delhi

Delhi Police's crime branch arrests two men from Uttar Pradesh for posing as medical service providers and stealing from senior citizens in Delhi.

The Delhi Police’s crime branch on Tuesday said they arrested two people from different places in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly posing as medical service providers and stealing from senior citizens in Delhi on Sunday.

Police identified the suspects as Rinku Kumar alias Ankit Kumar alias Kallu, 33, of Greater Noida and Pramod Kumar, 38, of Bulandshahr. The stolen jewellery and cash were recovered from the suspects, police added. Special commissioner of police (crime), Ravindra Singh Yadav, said a resident of West Patel Nagar alleged that on October 9, she hired a medical attendant for her 85-year-old father-in-law.

“Two days later, her mother-in-law was shocked to find that the suspect had stolen all the jewellery and cash and escaped. He then switched off his phone and it was found he got the SIM issued on a fake identity,” said Yadav.

“CCTV footage was collected in which two people were seen approaching the residence of the complainant. One went inside while the second man kept a watch,” he said.

Later, a raid was conducted and Rinku was arrested from Greater Noida while Pramod was arrested from Bulandshahr.

“During the interrogation, Rinku said that he used to get the details of the individuals through a networking site involved in providing medical attendants to potential clients. The suspects disguise themselves and constantly wear a mask during their services with these families,” added Yadav.

Police said that Rinku initially started working as a labourer. “Then he came in contact with one of his cousins Hemant Kumar, who carried out theft while posing as a medical attendant. After Hemant’s arrest, Rinku adopted the same methods. Pramod had intially opened dhaba for a living, where he met Rinku and Hemant. They both convinced him to join their activities,” the special CP added.

Police suspect the two duped several other victims as well. “Investigation is in progress in this regard,” Yadav added.
