Two held for stealing ₹48 lakh from employer

Two people have been arrested in Gujarat for allegedly stealing INR48.5 lakh ($65,000) from a Mumbai-based chartered accountant. One of the accused was a former employee of the accountant, while the other had worked for the CA for six months. The police have recovered INR25 lakh from the pair.

MUMBAI: The LT Nagar police went on a manhunt — first to Rajasthan and then to Gujarat — where they finally arrested two people, who allegedly stole ₹48.50 lakh from a South Mumbai-based chartered accountant. The police said they have recovered ₹25 lakh of the stolen money from the accused.

The complainant alleged that he had sent two of his employees to collect cash of ₹48.50 lakh from a friend, who was into courier business. One of his employees collected the cash and made away with it along with an accomplice, who was a former employee of the CA.

The accused are Aman Sagar Ramesh Bhavan, 27, who had been working with the chartered accountant for six months, and his friend Kalyan Singh alias Karan Bhavar Singh Rajput, 28. The latter used to work as an office boy with the complainant and was sacked two months back. Both are native of Pali district in Rajasthan.

According to the police, the complainant Vivek Harish Kumar Chaudhary, 33, who lives in Fanas Wadi in Kalbadevi, had employed two persons — Aman Sagar and Suresh Chaudhary — as office boys.

Vivek alleged that the incident occurred on March 24, when the complainant sent Aman and Suresh to collect ₹48.50 lakh from his friend Lalit Kumar Mahankali Trivedi, 47, and hand it over at his home.

When both his employees were on their way to Trivedi’s house, Aman told Suresh that he will collect the money and that he is free to go home. After collecting the money, Aman met Singh and the two decided to flee with the cash to their native place.

Vivek waited for a few hours and then called Aman’s mobile number but found it switched off. He then contacted Trivedi and learnt that Aman had collected the money and left from his office, said Jyoti Desai, senior police inspector of the LT Marc police station.

Vivek contacted Aman’s father who said that his son was not home. Vivek then approached the LT Marg police and submitted an application. Police investigated the matter and registered an FIR on April 7 against both the accused.

A police team then visited the native place of the accused but found that they had left from there as well. After enquiring people known to the accused and learnt that the two were in Gujarat. The police then went there and arrested the two accused.

Police said they have recovered ₹25 lakh from them. The accused were brought to Mumbai and arrested, said Rahul Bhandare, assistant police inspector.
