Woman killed, her uncle injured after container hits bike in Mumbra

A woman was killed and her uncle injured after being hit by a container in Mumbra toll Naka. The driver of the container fled the scene.

A 45-year-old woman riding pillion was killed and her uncle riding the bike suffered injuries after being hit by an unknown heavy container at Mumbra toll Naka on Monday night, the police said on Tuesday.

The police said that the deceased has been identified as Reshma Iqbal Peerjade, 45, a resident of Wadala in Mumbai, and the injured identified as Malang Suleman Sheikh, 45, a resident of Shantinagar area in Bhiwandi.

The incident took place at the Mumbra bypass towards the Kausa area around 9 p.m. when Malang was riding a bike carrying Reshma as pillion. They were headed towards Bhiwandi via the Mumbra bypass from Wadala and met with an accident.

“An unknown container speeding towards the Kausa area from Mumbra dashed them from behind and Reshma fell off the bike and came under the rear wheel of the container, while Malang fell off the left side on the road. Reshma suffered grievous head injuries,” said poIice sub inspector, Sampat Chavhan, Mumbra Police Station.

The passerbys rushed to the spot and alerted the police and they were taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa for further medical procedure.

Malang on the bike went to Wadala to meet his relatives. While returning from Wadala, Reshma accompanied him to Bhiwandi on his bike.

A case was lodged under sections 304 (A) (causing death by negligence), 279 (rush and driving on a public road) 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and under section 184, 134 of Motor Vehicle Act.

Nivrutti Kolhatkar, senior police inspector, Mumbra Police Station said, “After the accident, the driver of the container immediately fled from the spot. We are going through CCTV footage installed near the Mumbra bypass. We scrutinized the footage of the container and we will nab the driver soon. “

Police sources said that the body was handed over to the family member for the final rites after conducting a post-mortem. The body was taken to native place in Satara district, Maharashtra for the final rites.
