A resident who was caught dumping waste into the canal was asked to collect the same from the water body.

The officials appealed to the public to stop dumping waste into the canal or strict action would be taken against the violators, including hefty challans.

The civic body officials, along with the members of different NGOs including SB Pandhi, Maneet Diwan etc and students of Guru Nanak Public School (GNPS), also organised an awareness drive at the site to stop residents from dumping waste.

Zonal commissioner (Zone D) Jasdev Sekhon said the authorities are working to clean the canal, but it cannot be done without the support of residents. The residents should stop dumping waste into the canal and create awareness among others to keep the environment and water bodies clean. Hefty challans will be issued against violators.

Local bodies minister Inderbir Singh Nijjar had kickstarted the work to clean the Sidhwan Canal from BRS Nagar canal bridge on January 4. The stretch of canal from Lohara canal bridge to Barewal canal bridge is being cleaned under the project.

The civic body officials added that the canal falls under the jurisdiction of the irrigation department. Amid rising concern over garbage and filth dumped into the water body, which moves through the city, the MC has stepped up to clean the canal in coordination with the irrigation department.

Nijjar had also kickstarted the project to install two-metre high chain-linked iron fencing, along the 13-km-long stretch of canal within the city limits on January 4. The aim of the project is to stop residents from dumping waste into the canal.
