Assistant commissioner of police (ACP, licencing) Somnath, along with the police team, reached the gun house and scanned the record, weapons and ammunition.
The ACP added that apart from scanning the records, they are also checking if the gun houses are following all security norms. He said they were checking if the CCTV cameras are installed in the gun houses, adding that the gun houses must have channel gates and a safe and intruder alarm installed.
All 19 gun houses in the city would be inspected, the ACP said.
633 arms licences scanned
Further, he added that at least 16,000 people have arms licences in the city. The police would cancel the arms licences of people facing trial in heinous crimes, he said, adding that, till date, the police have already scanned 633 arms licences in the city.
About 10 days ago, the Punjab government banned songs promoting “gun culture” and violence and prohibited flaunting of weapons, besides the review of arms licences in the state to ensure law and order.
The state government has been under fire from the opposition, particularly the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), over the deteriorating law and order. Concerns over law and order have heightened after back-to-back murders of Shiv Sena (Taksali) leader Sudhir Suri in Amritsar and Dera Sacha Sauda follower Pardeep Singh in Faridkot, within a week earlier this month.
