Five girls, aged between 12 and 19, drowned in the Ganga river in Bihar’s Munger on Wednesday morning. The body of a girl has been recovered while the search operation for others remains underway.
Out of the five, four were sisters.
The incident occurred at the Bakchapra Ganga Ghat in Munger district when one girl slipped into deep waters while four others were swept away trying to save her. Besides local divers, the state disaster response force (SDRF) has been pressed into rescue and search operations.

Those drowned have been identified and all are residents of Shyampur Bakchapra village.
“Two bodies have been recovered and the search operation continues,” station house officer (SHO) Bipin Kumar told HT over phone.
According to police, the girls had gone to Ganga Ghat at around 8am on Wednesday to take holy bath when one of the girls went into deep waters while the remaining four drowned trying to save her.
