Pune: Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) chairman and managing director (CMD) Pankaj Deore on Monday said that 2,000 buses will be added to the public transport utility fleet by the end of the year. The civic transport body has set an ambitious target of carrying 20 lakh passengers daily and generating 4 crore in daily revenue in 2026.

Rapid urban expansion, rising population and increasing commuter demand have put immense pressure on PMPML’s existing fleet, which stands at around 2,000 buses, far below the required strength.

“Pressure on the city’s public transport system will significantly reduce if we succeed in achieving a fleet strength of around 4,000 buses. Our goal is to take PMPML towards financial self-sufficiency,” he said.

PMPML operates services across Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) limits, where experts estimate that at least 4,500 buses are required to meet commuter demand effectively.

Sachin Jaju, a daily officegoer from Pimpri, said, “Bus frequency is a major issue. If PMPML adds more buses and improves punctuality, many people like me will happily switch from two-wheelers to buses.”
