Series of inaugurations on Sunday as PMC term draws to a close

PUNE As this is the last Sunday before the end of five-year term of the civic general body, elected representatives of all political parties in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) are going all out to hold inauguration and foundation stone-laying functions for civic works in their respective electoral areas ahead of the forthcoming civic polls.
A marathon of inauguration programmes have been organised in the city in the presence of respective party leaders. Deputy chief minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar leads the list with his plans to inaugurate over 30 programmes in 12 hours during his visit to Pune on Sunday.
The current term of the PMC will end on March 14 after which it will have an administrator to look after all civic affairs till the formation of new general body after civic elections. The polls which were to be held in April, were further delayed due to the state government’s decision to hold the elections only after ensuring that political reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) is restored.
Pawar, according to NCP leaders, is likely to make a new record by attending various programmes and inaugurate civic work carried out from ward level funds by corporators. Pawar will start his day at 7am and will end at 9pm without any break.
NCP city unit president Prashant Jagtap said, “Thirty inaugurations will take place on Sunday. Since Ajit Pawar will be present, all events will be held on time.”
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members have also planned several inaugurations from elected members funds. Earlier, leader of opposition, Devendra Fadnavis had announced to visit the city for inaugurations. However, he later announced that he has cancelled his Pune trip.
As there was no permission earlier for organising the big events due to Covid restrictions, elected members had delayed their events. Later, they did not get appointments of party leaders for the inauguration. But, as Sunday is the last weekend, all the elected members are busy to do the inauguration of their works which carried under ward development funds, said BJP officials.
