Malin village in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district saw one of the worst-ever landslides on early morning of July 30, 2014 when residents were asleep. It was believed to have been caused by heavy rainfall, and killed at least 151 people.
As per the district officials, residents of both villages will be temporarily shifted from next week to safe places during the monsoon period.
As per the letter sent by Pune district collector Rajesh Deshmukh last month to the Pune divisional commissioner, “Both these villages come under heavy rainfall catchment area and are surrounded by mountains making it a landslide-prone region. While these villages are surrounded by small water bodies like odha (stream) and lakes, during the rainy season the water flow of these streams carry forest waste and heavy branches. After our officials studied the geographical topology of these areas, they suggested rehabilitation of villagers. Hence, we have submitted a proposal covering an estimate of land required for rehabilitation and development.”
Rajendra Kachare, Bhor sub divisional officer, said, “Both the villages are ready to shift, but it will take time and so for this year monsoon period we are going to shift them to safe places. For this, a visit is planned along with other government department officials on June 9.”
