PMC’s apathy forced citizens to seek separate councils: Vijay Shivtare

The failure of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to provide basic amenities was the primary reason for Uruli Devachi and Phursungi residents to request a demerger from the civic body and seek a separate municipal council for the two towns, according to Shinde-led Shiv Sena leader Vijay Shivtare.
Shivtare, who spearheaded the initiative, applauded the Maharashtra government’s recent decision to establish a separate municipal council for Uruli and Phursungi.
Reacting to the development, the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leader stated, “All parties supported the formation of a separate municipal council but later took opposing positions in public. We have the documentation that the opposition parties requested to form the municipal council.”
Both villages were merged into the PMC in 2017, but the civic body did no constructive development at these two locations over the last five years, instead burdening citizens with more taxes.
“The properties that were paying ₹3 lakh tax in Gram Panchayat suddenly got bills of nearly ₹40 lakh,” Shivtare explained.
“It was not acceptable and we had to demand a separate municipal council.”
He went on to say that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has accepted the demand, and a notification for the same has been officially issued.
Meanwhile, many leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are dissatisfied with the decision, which they believe is politically motivated.
