It is said that most of our problems can be solved by simple living. That doesn’t mean we should give away worldly necessities and lead an ascetic life. Instead, we should curtail our unnecessary needs. Most problems arise when people try to live beyond their means. For example, someone trying to imitate her relatives’ or friends’ high standard of living and thus taking loans/ using credit cards to buy things beyond her means, and eventually falling in a debt trap. Some also splurge during wedding ceremonies and other functions just to impress others, and also to keep up appearances.

Another way of simple living is eating nutritious, healthy food. Fruits, salads and sprouted pulses are not only less expensive, but also good for the health. Many people consider it a status symbol to dine at expensive hotels, and don’t mind spending a fortune on the bill.
Let us not forget that people like Mahatma Gandhi and APJ Abdul Kalam became great and popular because of their simple living and high thinking. Gandhi decided to dress in a simple manner after watching poor peasants and farmers. Don’t say no to fashionable clothes, but why shun what’s simple for the sake of fashion?
Being content at a simple family get-together, watching a child play or getting excited at small accomplishments, and being happy for others’ achievements are baby steps to a happy life.
Let’s try and be content with the blessings god has bestowed on us and try to help the underprivileged wherever and whenever we can.
